We can't have a salute to the Musical Noir without a snippet from The Samula (that's Fuller, not Davis, Jr.).

Orthodox Holy Week started yesterday. While this is not a Byzantine
hymn we’ll be hearing this week, it is a fine example of Musical
Noir
and a duet far surpassing any by Cocker & Warnes,
Medley & Warnes, Travolta & Newton-John, and even
Rogers & Parton – it’s our lovable faves, Mitchum & Gish in…

With music written by a teenaged Frank Zappa, here is – in
the most prescient film noir ever made – the King of Kool, the
Shaman of Cinema, the Saint of the Underground, the Madman of the
Method, the Immutable Essence of the Universe, in a film written, produced,
directed by and starring himself – the one and only Timothy Carey!!!!

April 22, 1970: Did we really think then that 38 years later we’d still
be celebrating Earth Day? Check out the May 2008 Atlantic

is General Counsel for. There’s still some hope.

Hello all

Nice thread. Good selections. I haven’t had time to rummage through all 60 pages of this thread, so if I’m repeating something please forgive me.

As a matter of curiosity, are there any songs, or artists that were beneath your contempt when you were younger (state your reasons), but have grown to like. For me, it was the BeeGees. I couldn't stand them back in the 1970's. But, over the years I've come to appreciate how good they actually were.

I’d like to post a song if I may. An old favorite of mine. Couldn’t find a decent video of McGuinness Flint doing this, but here are a couple of excellent cover versions.

Despite the title, it’s actually a joyful song.

Beneath contempt? I can't think of any artist, rock or otherwise, that I've disliked that much. Never cared much for middle-of-the-road pop from the '50s-'70s such as John Gary, Jack Jones, Wayne Newton, Jim Nabors, Robert Goulet, Barbra Steisand, etc. (mostly because of the song selection and arrangements, not their pipes), but I've always loved Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra (esp. with Nelson Riddle), Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole and -- yes -- Johnny Mathis (for reasons, see the make-out question for the ages in DINER).

Some rock folk from my teens that I could not get into (and still don't): The Doors (Kreiger wrote some nice singles, but Morrison...blech), The Grateful Dead (nice idea...but boring), The Supremes (Diana Ross isn't my kind of singer). Maybe the one I disliked most, but now appreciate a bit more, is Elvis Presley -- the post-"Jailhouse Rock" (1957)/pre-"Guitar Man" (1968) years. I thought he was too soft and the movies dreadful, but there were some goodies in there ("Little Sister", "Viva Las Vegas").

Disliked Disco generally -- until I saw the opening of SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER. Now Disco Inferno is one of my favorite records, and I love Chic.

For most of the '70s, I was a jazz only kinda a guy. Then came The Ramones, thank goodness.

Thanks for asking...and listening.

Welcome to Dewey’s Record Party, Metry! We hope to be hearing a
lot more from you! I’ve been thinking about those artists I hated once
then decided to love later. DJ ChiO mentioned Jack Jones as a practitioner
of a type of song he didn’t like, and I thought, yeah, that’s it.
Today I love JACK JONES (and others of his normally dubious ilk.)
But for Dewey, in1963 he was, like, out of the question.
“Wives And Lovers”

I also use to hate all those dopey mid-60s CHRIS MONTEZ 45s
on A&M. Now, I love ‘em! Go Chris, go! “Time After Time”

Also, for the above-mentioned Earth Day celebrations: here in Northern
California, many of us are locked in a major battle with Governor
Schwarzenegger and the CDFA's insidious plan to douse the state with
UNTESTED TOXIC pesticides this summer! Not a joke; go to
www.stopthespray.org and please sign the petition; you don't have
to live in California to do so. Every name helps!

Mike Battle, the inventor of the Echoplex tape echo machine has passed away.

Some of that New York Independent Late Film Noir that
we love so much.

SHADOWS directed by John Cassavetes, with some
hipster Beatnik rock’n’roll and a lick from Charles Mingus.

And speaking of JOHN CASSAVETES, the crown prince of
modern noir, here he is in an Italian TV promo spot for his jazz-
laden private eye show from 1959, JOHNNY STACCATO...

Mr. Cassavetes directed a very fine 1962 film starring Bobby Darin
and Stella Stevens called TOO LATE BLUES. Check out the
fantastic music over the opening credits...
