In a weak moment of sacrilege, I offer this bit of absurdity. Here’s a track of The Beatles’ Drive My Car mixed with Van Halen’s Running With the Devil:

IN A BIX MOOD

Post by mookryan »

Something about the rain and winter coming around again,
even in San Francisco, has got me thinking a lot about Bix lately ...

In A Mist

Twenty-eight and dying of booze.
Through eight years of hot cornet on bandstands
and jamming, he caught his music in flashes,
blew instant recompositions of themes
bent through silver, mixing colors quick
before his phrases could die like the smoke
above grey seas of laughing faces, faces of the deaf
adrift on a thousand lost dance floors.

When seizures and the shakes accompanied
those sacred flashes, he worked on ...
through a whole piano suite of shadow, glare,
bathtub gin, the DT's and broken light
on any borrowed upright he could find.
Shading himself from the morning stabs of sun,
he got back to where he was going all along ...

We lost a remarkable lady yesterday; back in the day, she turned the World on its ear, pun intended; her name was Yma Sumac, which in her native Kechua tongue meant "how beautiful", and she certainly was.
Before her name blows away on a high, Andean wind, let's get enthralled for a bit this a.m. with her astounding near-4-octave voice!

from Secret of the Incas:

Pachamama (quel witchy!)

Amor Indio

La Pampa (hubba-hubba)

Chuncho ( . . step away from hot beverages!)

DJ Klondike, thanks for the tribute to Ms Sumac--we were saddened
by the news but heartened by the glorious weirdness of her voice.
