Some birthdays one celebrates with a party. Others, one observes with
reverence and awe. Yesterday, I took my three photo lobby cards from
THE KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE that are of our fellow Piscean
Birthday Boy, placed them with my half-sheet of BAYOU a/k/a POOR
WHITE TRASH
(hanging directly above a half-sheet on GOD’S LITTLE
ACRE
– it’s our Southern Gothic Corner) and lit candles.

But now, two days after, with DJs Mr. & Mrs. Dewey’s most excellent
selections, we will continue the Shaman’s shimmy and shake:

I've been listening to this very nice girl group, which I first heard on a college radio programn here in NYC called "A Thousand Welcomes," which showcases Irish music. Very cool.

Liadan -- A sweet, slow one, and then a reel (don't know the names)

Reminds me of the parties in Irish bars in the "outer boroughs" of NYC where underage girls crash on the promise of providing the crowd with traditional Irish singing and dancing they've learned at St. Whoever's High School. Then they're supposed to go home, but sometimes they don't . . . . .

I remember that program -- Caol na Gael on WFUV, from Fordham University. Back in the 1980s I used to tune in to the program broadcast directly after it on Monday evenings, Le moment français hosted by Jean Gallia, and would usually catch the ending of Caol na Gael. Good stuff. :)

Many of the same programs are still on WFUV, only with different hosts. I hadn't listened to any of the college stations in some years, and have now come back into the fold. There's a lot of very interesting stuff on the college stations, many of which now seem to have affiliated themselves with the National Public Radio network. WFUV and WKCR (Columbia University) are my favorites -- and they are also the ones that seem to have the most powerful transmitters; some of the others are very hard to get, except very late at night. There was one station I used to listen to that came out of Seton Hall University, but I can't find it on my not very finely-tuned clock radio -- anyone know if it's still there?

On this ever so slow day at work, it's time to liven things up a bit!
How about an R.D. Burman/ Asha Bhosle tribute? Burman
was one of the great composers/singers of Bollywood films, and Asha
seems to have been his hot little muse (later becoming his wife).

Let's get started with what some consider one of Bollywood's
best cabaret scenes - EVER!
PIYA TU AB TO AAJA(Monica, Oh My Darling!)from the
film CARAVAN

This next one became the hip-hop anthem for youngsters of 1972
DUM MARO DUMfrom the film HARE RAMA HARE KRISHNA

Then there's the musical hit THE TRAIN,
with R.D and Asha singing MERI JAAN MEIN KAHAN

And here's something really depressing - Asha with English boy band,
Code Red, singing something stupid...

Or how about Asha and Australian cricketer Brett Lee singing
"YOU'RE THE ONE FOR ME"?

Which could only lead to R.D. Burman in this clip:
MAIN BHOOKHA (with R D Burman & Mehmood)
