rudyfan-
I felt the same way! I thought it was his daughter, or even worse, a much-too-young-for-him girl, and he is plying her with caviar which she doesn't like. She is too nice to tell him no. It somehow looks like he is on a power trip, which makes me wonder what happened after the photo op.... yecchh. Maybe I am reading too much into it...

Maybe Mr. Boles should book a dinner date with Don "Red" Barry, and eliminate the women between them entirely . .
More I ponder that, the photographer can stay home, too.

Re: *CANDIDS*
Thank you, Klondike. That picture of Don 'Red' Barry was the one that creeped me out. Was that an outtake from a Von Stroheim film that wasn't released?

Re: *CANDIDS*
I too thought the young lady was John Boles daughter although the LIFE magazine image simply stated that he was dining with a lady.
Below is another image from the same Chicago restaurant in 1945.

Oh, how I miss restaurants like that! I was only a boy, but I remember my parents taking me out to places similar. I suppose every town had its classy restaurants. Here in Stockton, California there were Otto's, Murphy's, Risso's, and Albert's. They were all dark with leather booths. The waiters were all dress in tuxedos or uniforms. You had to mind your manners, and everything was so beautiful. The women wore furs, and the men dressed for dinner. I wonder what happened to that world. Funny, I expected to grow up and be a part of all of that, but it is all gone.

I know what you mean. I'm sick of men in cargo shorts, women in sweatpants, everyone in baseball caps. Doesn't anyone own a dress anymore? (I do love my levis.)Oh, how I miss restaurants like that! That's a lovely picture of Natalie. It's like you're looking over her shoulder in the 3 way mirror. I love mirror photos and have one of my cat but that's a story for another thread.
