mongo,
Lovely picture of Ms Havoc. This past week I was thinking about her as I put her in the cast of at least 2 of my " fake noirs ".

All that elegance, and yet not a word about who "her people" were . . . but I'd still kill for Mildred's fried chicken recipe (or Eve Arden's phone #)!

I can't get past this strange hassock-like piece of furniture design. I sure hope this centipede/caterpillar-like creation wasn't one of William Haines' contributions to Chez Joan. It looks as though it would tip over rather easily.

Ellsworth Twohey would doubtless hint archly that it's a Keating piece; I'd like to believe that, but I'm haunted by the imagined sounds of Kent Smith sobbing. :|

Ha! It's all perspective. I saw the same piece, thought it was fabulous and declared it must be a Billy Haines! It takes all kinds, eh, Moira? Those legs look very Haines. Check out this Billy Haines ottoman of the same ilk:

Now I like your compact Billy Haines hassock, Marco! I think I can just picture myself tripping over the caterpillar ottoman pretty easily, so it is all in the eye of the beholder.

Do your really own any Haines pieces, Mr. Rubini? Or is it just wishful thinking?

No, no, no. That would be wishful thinking. I was just showing the similarity in leg styles as evidence that the caterpillar might be a Haines.

PEARL BAILEY (1918 - 1990)

Pearl Bailey was the keynote speaker at my university graduation. She had such a good time she enrolled and some years later graduated with a degree in French!

Hmmm,Wikipedia says it was theology but I distinctly remember that she studied French or French Studies. Maybe she double majored in theology and French.

Let's give a warm salute to Herb Anderson, one of Hollywood's utility bland guys who had a long and prolific career standing in the background.

He is probably best remembered by those of a certain age as the father of Dennis the Menace on TV, but he was everywhere in films and TV, and if you needed a store clerk, a mild-mannered GI, a geeky school teacher, or just a generally calm, shy and retiring kind of supporting actor, Anderson was your man. He just looked like he was born in horn-rimmed glasses and a tweed jacket with elbow patches, and he smoked many a contemplative pipe in his roles. He was a young contract player at Warner Bros. in the early 40s, and was in the background in quite a few Cagney movies, which is probably why no one noticed him.

Where would Hollywood be without such stalwarts?

Very good summation, Judith. I recall the first time I noticed Herb Anderson, and that was as the shy gob in "Navy Blues" with Ann Sheridan. He was a natural.
