Joan Collins on Hollywood

Post by stuart.uk »

Joan was interviewed by Piers Morgan. Here's part one of it from You Tube. Then underneath I'll give my observations

it was in interesting, but I wasn't so sure by what I believed. As far as Hollywood was concerned she said the casting couch was a reality and Marilyn was passed round like a piece of meet, though Joan said she always rejected such offers. She said she only met MM once, but she warned Joan to watch out for Zanuok. Joan went onto add, Zanuok pounched on her, but again she rejected him. Joan gave the impression that she lost many roles that way. I can't remember, if that was the reason she gave for losing out to Elizabeth Taylor for Cleopatra.

Joan said she'd never had cosmetic surgery, though felt todays actresses didn't feel the need to look glamorous, though she said Sandra Bulluck was beautiful. Joan felt her own fans wouldn't accept her looking scruffy.

She also said roles started to dry up once she passed 40, even saying Shirley Maclaine saying it was hard to get work. After Joan said Mother's roles were played by 45-yr-olds, I thought of Sally Field right of the bat, who is in Brothers And Sisters. ThenI thought of her fellow brits Helen Mirren, Julie Walters and Brenda Blethyn, who are all passed 50 and at the pk of their powers. Joan did say, on the advice of Samantha Edgar she signed on the dole, even though financially she didn't need to

She gave first husband Maxwell Reed a hard time, claiming he'd verbally abused her, even trying to sell her for a night to a Sheik. Anthony Newley was a tortured soul, who was also a serial adulterer. However, it appears to be 4th time lucky for Joan, having been married to Percy for 8-yrs

As regards her soft porn films The Stud and The b****, the two films that probably landed her Dynasty, one of her daughters, though a little uncomfortable, treated it like a laugh, but her son didn't like it at all. Joan said if she'd known that it would have a negative effect on her children, she probably wouldn't have made the movies.

Stuart, I only saw brief parts of this programme, and much as I have a bit of a soft spot for Joan Collins (a real old trouper and an old-fashioned glamourpuss), it strikes me as a bit convenient that the reason she might have lost out on the role of Cleopatra was because she rejected Zanuck's passes. Also, that her integrity had resulted in her losing other plum roles.

Surely Joan Collins was never really that big a star in fifties Hollywood? A leading lady at best. It seems unlikely - for reasons of pure economics - that she would ever have been considered for the starring role in a multi-million dollar epic like Cleopatra. The evil queen in Land of the Pharaohs was much more her level. However, as most of her contemporaries from that era are dead, she is free to remake the facts of her career as she chooses, I suppose.

Joan made an underrated movie western with a big star Gregory Peck in The Bravados. She played a simaliar role to what ODH did in The Private Lives Of Elizabeth And Essex, in Bette Davis' The Virgin Queen, though to be fair it was British made, unlike the more famous TPLOEAE. So IMO there were a couple of good movies in their. However, Phil I agree with you regarding her star status in the 50s. She did admit her pk yrs were Dynasty in the 80s

stuart,
Thank you so much for the video of the ever glamorous Joan Collins. Its seems to me that I have seen film where Joan is auditioning for the Cleo role. I believe that she would have been better than Liz.

On the subject of Ms. Collins' veracity, let us not forget the occasion on which, appearing as a guest on "The Arsenio Hall Show" (either '92 or '93), she remarked to her host that she was tired of the press quipping her about her age, as after all, she'd been born in 1949, and anyone who doubted her could just go check her birth certificate.
Hmmm . . you know, I've seen The Land of the Pharaohs, and she sure didn't look like she was six years old! :? :?

Ha ha, that is hilarious. It reminds me of when Jackie Stallone was appearing on Celebrity Big Brother in Britain. I can't remember how old she claimed to be, but she would have to have given birth to Sylvester at eight or thereabouts.
