Summer Under The Stars

Post by Mr. Arkadin »

Looks like the list is up:

http://www.tcm.com/schedule/month/?eid=&oid=8/1/2010

Lots of great movies showing. Ingrid Bergman's day has a lot of good ones including Europa 51 (1952) and Autumn Sonata (1978) which she made with that other Bergman guy.

Ann Sheridan gets a day with some rarely seen films:
Naughty but Nice (1939)
Wings for the Eagle (1942)
One More Tomorrow (1946)
Juke Girl (1942)
...and the incredible Edge of Darkness (1943) showing on Flynn's day.

Other highlights:
The Shopworn Angel (1938)
The Tarnished Angels (1958)
The Stunt Man (1980)
Uncertain Glory (1944)
The Rocking Horse Winner (1949)
He Who Gets Slapped (1924)

If all that's not enough, TCM will finally be showing The Wild Bunch (1969). Save me a place on the couch!

I'm happy to see Woody Strode, Lee Remick and Gene Tierney get a day. Robert Ryan, too, though I was disappointed to see there is still no About Mrs. Leslie.

Hi Miss G. I was also glad to see Strode get a day but was disappointed they did not include Sergeant Rutledge (1960) or Keoma (1976), which I consider two of his best performances. I'm with you on RR as well, but I am glad for what they have chosen to show. This looks like a better grouping than the last couple of years, where I felt like they continued to plug the same stars over and over.

Finally everyone can see the oddity that is Gene Tierney's "Shanghai Gesture." An interesting looking day for Thelma Todd as well.

Well I certainly hope everyone does get to see The Gesture. It's one of my favorites It also has to be one of the most bowdlerized movies of all time. You'll see what I mean as the action picks up in Mother Gin Sling's (also a name changed for the sake or propriety) private apartments. Also, if you care about such things, pay attention to Tierney's gorgeous, Cassini-designed wardrobe which is, for the most part, startlingly contemporary-looking.

I wonder, every time I watch this one, how they all kept such straight faces. Victure Mature in a turban -- sheesh!

I'm excited because John Gilbert is finally getting his day on TCM! August 24.

Quite a few years ago, I attended a screening of the Photoplay Productions (that's Kevin Brownlow's company) print of Flesh and the Devil at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta -- it was quite the eye-popper on that enormous screen. Leatrice Gilbert Fountain was there to talk about her father and signed copies of her biography Dark Star: The Untold Story of the Meteoric Rise and Fall of Legendary Silent Screen Star John Gilbert. Very exciting to meet her!

You are quite tight. The TCM day starts as early as 6am but can start as late as 6:30am. On June 1 the August schedule should be on their website.

Hi Arkadin,
Sergeant Rutledge is the 8:00 prime time feature on Woody's day. I've never seen Keoma.

Wow. I guess I missed it when I looked. One more good thing coming 'round the bend in life.

Keoma is a bombastic Italian western, but is worth seeing for Strode's performance. I tried to find some youtube clips with Woody, but had to settle for the trailer (although you can see him if you look closely):

"a bombastic Italian western" - hahahaha!! Love that description! I would watch it just to see Woody. Thanks, J.

Joe,

I'm with you on Robert Ryan, Ann Sheridan, Ethel Barrymore, Maureen O'Hara and Thelma Todd.

I am also thrilled that Woody Strode is included in this year's line up.

And The Wild Bunch on TCM, I can't wait for the discussion to begin. It is one of my favorite films and one of my favorite westerns. The story of men out of time, literally and figuratively. "It's them!"

Can't wait!

You can get an early dose Tuesday with the rarely shown western, Silver River (1948). I'll try and post a reminder late tomorrow.
