Tonight on The Essentials TCM is showing Meet John Doe where the character played by Edward Arnold is an extremely wealthy businessman who takes over a failing newspaper in order to brainwash the American people into believing what is false is actually true.* The Keeper of the Flame starring Tracy & Hepburn tells the same story, but is a less humorous way.Citizen Kanein the newsreel footage tells of Kane early support for fascists in Europe. The characters played by Burt Lancaster, Whit Bissell, and John Larkin are clearly rightwing traitors, in fact Larkin is called an out and out fascist in the film, by MacReady I think. Anyway can someone else think of of an American film with an American born character, of some authority, who was portrayed as an out and out fascist ?
